If you work in Qatar and you're thinking about a new job, or your contract is about to end, your end-of-service gratuity is one of the first things to work out. The rule in Qatar's Labour Law is clear, with one detail that differs from other Gulf countries: there's no automatic step-up after five years.
The rule (Labour Law No. 14 of 2004, Article 54)
- You qualify after at least one year of service.
- At least 3 weeks' (21 days') basic wage for each year, with part years pro rata.
- It's due when you resign too, not only when your employer ends the contract.
- Your contract can give more, for example a month per year after a certain number of years.
An example on QAR 8,000 basic
| Years of service | Gratuity (legal minimum) |
|---|---|
| 1 | QAR 5,600 |
| 2 | QAR 11,200 |
| 3 | QAR 16,800 |
| 5 | QAR 28,000 |
| 7 | QAR 39,200 |
| 10 | QAR 56,000 |
| 15 | QAR 84,000 |
Gratuity by years
Check these in your contract
- Does it promise more than the legal minimum? Many employers give a month per year.
- What basic salary is written in it? Allowances usually don't count.
- Do you have unused leave days? They're paid on top of the gratuity.
